1: The Roots – What They Do
The Roots have got a lot of attention this week after a certain video, with a certain president went viral. Rewind 18 years and you’ll see that not much has changed. The Roots never make a bad record, with humour and lightheartedness just some of the elements that continue to make them such a standout collective. ‘What They Do‘ was the last single released off the 1996 album ‘Illadelph Halflife’, reaching number 34 on the Billboard 100. This video really comes alive with the version that includes ‘captions’, which we can’t seem to find! If anyone can find it, let us know!
2: A Tribe Called Quest – Scenario
Ok so with Throwback Friday, we might from time to time want to revisit those classic tracks which we all know well, but you just might not have heard for a while. There are so many A Tribe Called Quest tracks we could rock for this feature, and that we probably will in weeks to come, but right now… let’s head back to January 1992.
For a lot of people, this was one of the first time we got introduced to Busta. The way he came in on this track with his voice and verse was explosive and set the template for a career which has now spanned two decades. Look closely and you’ll also be able to spot some fresh faced appearances from De La Soul and Redman (plus a few other familiar faces!) From ‘The Low End Theory’ album, this track reached number 57. Proof that chart numbers aren’t everything.
3: Kut Klose – I Like
Probably been a while since you heard this one right? Keith Sweat protegés Kut Klose had short lived success in 1995 with their album ‘Surrender‘. The single, ‘I Like’ was their biggest commercial hit from the album, reaching number 34 on the Billboard 100. We’re not quite sure what happened to them after this, but we did hear some rumours they were reuniting last year. Girls just don’t move as cool as that any more, do they?
