The majority of us know MC Hammer for two reasons, the whole ‘U Can’t Touch This’ business and a recent, embarrassing attempt at dethroning Jay-Z. If you didn’t catch the latter, we’re truly sorry for even giving it light to resurface. Anyway, King Baggy Pants is possibly on the verge of a huge resurrection. Possibly. No he’s not buried the hatchet with Jigga and signed to Roc Nation, nor is he about to release a Grammy award winning album.
We’re about to experience the MC Hammer search engine.
MC Hammer’s Search Engine – WireDoo
For those who haven’t heard, MC Hammer’s search engine ‘WireDoo‘ is currently pre-beta and was unveiled by Hammer at O’Reilly Media’s Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco earlier this month.
Maybe our surprise at this news was actually a little disrespectful. After all, for those who don’t know, MC Hammer has been something of an online enthusiast for over a decade now and was one of the first Hip Hop artists to really take advantage and experiment with where Hip Hop and online could benefit one and other. It started with MC Hammer USA, an online portal built by Hammer back towards the beginning of the millennium. Hammer is also active in roles working for TechCrunch50, a project supporting web start-ups and dancejam.com, an online community for dance enthusiasts. MC Hammer has become somewhat of a familiar face around Silicon Valley over the last 10 years, but still, nobody could have been expecting that he’d take on the mammoth challenge of launching a search engine.

So, What Is WireDoo?
We really can’t say too much right now due to the lack of details and hands on action. What we can tell you is that, in theory this could work and it’s not just a pipe dream. We can also show you the logo to the right, which we hope is changed very soon. Google currently dominates our lives and Bing picks up the few scraps that are left, but WireDoo is offering something different all together. ‘Relationship search’ or ‘deep search’ as it’s being called, will take things that step further to make things more relevant each time we enter a search query. As MC Hammer notes in the video above, a search query creates almost a snowball effect of information. In theory this could take advantage of people’s natural inquisitiveness in a way never seen before.
For example, currently in Google a user may enter the search query ‘Hip Hop Chicago’ and this may lead to additional multiple searches such as ‘Hip Hop Venues in Chicago’, ‘Hip Hop Artists From Chicago’, ‘Chicago Hip Hop Videos’ etc until the user refines their own search query until they find exactly what they are looking for.
In WireDoo, we will automatically be given related content, without need for additional search queries. This means we will be presented with related content to our search query ‘Hip Hop Chicago’ upon our first search query.
In theory, this sounds great, but we’ll have to get our hands on it before commenting any further. Beta testing should be available in the next few weeks and as an SEO company, we’re hugely excited to see how it all works and will keep you all updated.
Other Hip Hop Artist Search Engine Hook Ups
Though Hammer’s task is a huge one, Hip Hop artists have spotted the potential in search and have been trying to use it to their advantage for the last few years with varied success.
Most notably, two of Hip Hop’s biggest names, Jay-Z and Kanye West have both been testing the water in search engine hook ups. Kanye West teamed with Prodege in 2008 to launch ‘SearchKanyeWest.SwagBucks.com‘ a search engine powered by Ask and Google that offers points rewards which can be redeemed for artist related merchandise based on certain search queries. SwagBucks is still running but is a little too gimmicky to be taken seriously by a wide range of users and lacks a little in terms of real search innovation.
Then back in late 2010, Jay-Z teamed with Bing for an ambitious launch of his book Decoded, which involved users signing up to an online game with additional offline aspects. Despite it being a great book, the whole online/offline concept was a little messy and the idea pretty much bombed.
So, who knows, WireDoo might just be the start of something special and don’t be too surprised if you see someone like Russell, Diddy or Mr Carter attempting something new with online search in the not too distant future.
